On June 8, 2026, the Department of National Defence (DND) hosted the official opening of the Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Valcartier Research Centre (VRC) pavilion complex.

The inauguration of the new 30,900 square meters pavilion complex marks the completion of a $166 million project and recognizes a major milestone in modernizing and enhancing the research capabilities at VRC. The new state-of-the-art facility, which includes more than 80 new multidisciplinary laboratories, offices, and storage spaces, will improve collaboration among researchers and support advanced defense research and development, contributing to national security and technological innovation.

The VRC is a key component of DND’s science and technology enterprise and one of seven DRDC centers nationwide. It supports the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) through evidence-based advice and applied research in critical defense technology domains, including information systems, optronics, and combat systems science.

The Centre operates a highly specialized infrastructure comprising more than 100 buildings and a seven square-kilometer test range at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier. It includes a secure energetic materials experimental complex, a trisonic wind tunnel, a 240-meter aeroballistic corridor, and deployable mobile laboratories enabling field-based experimentation.

The VCR modernization strengthens Canada’s defense science and technology base and supports DRDC’s continued ability to provide leading-edge support to the CAF in a rapidly evolving security and innovation environment.

As global competition accelerates and emerging technologies reshape the security environment, the Valcartier Research Centre will strengthen Canada’s ability to develop sovereign capabilities, deepen partnerships with industry and academia, and ensure the Canadian Armed Forces maintain a technological edge in an increasingly complex world.
