On June 24, 2026, from 4:20 PM for approximately 60 minutes, Defense Minister Koizumi held a defense ministerial meeting with Canadian Defense Minister McGinty, who was visiting Japan.

  1. At the outset, Minister Koizumi expressed his heartfelt welcome to the Canadian Minister of Defense ‘s visit to Japan, his first since March of this year, and stated that he welcomed the fact that the two had been able to meet frequently, communicate closely, and build a strong relationship of trust.
  2. Minister Koizumi mentioned that Japan revised its Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and its operational guidelines in April of this year and expressed gratitude for Canada’s welcoming response to the revision.
  3. The two ministers welcomed the recent entry into force of the Defense Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement between Japan and Canada and agreed to use this as a springboard to continue discussions toward creating new defense equipment and technology cooperation projects.
  4. The two ministers agreed to work even more closely together to further deepen Japan-Canada defense cooperation and exchanges.
