As a member of the NATO-led maritime security operation Sea Guardian, Germany makes an important contribution to NATO’s southern flank. The German Armed Forces are to continue participating in this mission.
On October 28, 2026, the German Federal Cabinet decided to extend the mission for another year. The personnel ceiling is to be reduced compared to the previous mandate. The Bundestag still needs to approve the Federal Government’s proposal. On November 4, 2026, during the first reading of the mandate extension in the German Bundestag, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius explained the mission’s role for the alliance: “The security of Europe is also decided in the Mediterranean.” NATO needs a reliable presence in the Mediterranean and a dependable situational awareness. “NATO must remain capable of action here as well,” the Minister stated.
Pistorius reported to parliament that in the last two years alone, German units had contributed to the alliance’s maritime situational awareness on a total of approximately 588 sea days. “This is a concrete and very, very significant contribution by our men and women to security on the southern flank,” Pistorius said.

Position
The Mediterranean is of geostrategic importance. Tensions in the Middle East and other regional challenges, as well as refugee and migration flows, impact this region. Given the tense situation in Europe, it is more crucial to secure NATO territory in all directions – 360 degrees. A protected southern flank of NATO is of particular importance in this regard and is also in the interest of the Mediterranean coastal states. The NATO-led Operation Sea Guardian is an essential contribution to security in this region.
Order
Sea Guardian ‘s mission is maritime surveillance. The mission aims to prevent maritime terrorism and curb arms smuggling at sea. Vessels suspected of being linked to terrorist activities may be searched, seized, or diverted. This is intended to strengthen security in the Mediterranean. The boats and ships participating in the operation contribute to the creation of a unified situational awareness picture.
Outlook
The mission is part of Germany’s broader international engagement. Within NATO, Germany is working to strengthen the security of the alliance’s territory and expand the European contribution within the alliance. Closer cooperation with the EU -led operation EUNAVFOR MED Irini is being pursued. Furthermore, Germany participates in EUNAVFOR Aspides to protect freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. Sea Guardian also serves as a platform for maritime cooperation with NATO allies and partners in the southern Mediterranean.
What happens next?
After the first reading in parliament, the German Bundestag must vote on whether to continue the deployment.
