On July 31, the 14th Japan-Canada Foreign and Defense Ministers’ Meeting (PM) was held in Ottawa, Canada.|
The Japanese side of the talks was represented by Tomoki Matsuo, Deputy Director-General of the Defense Policy Bureau of the Ministry of Defense, and Fumito Yamamoto, Counselor of the North American Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Canadian side was represented by Travis Mouhen, Director-General of the International Security Policy Office of the Canadian Ministry of National Defence, Eric Laporte, Acting Director-General of the International Security Policy and Strategy Office of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Joya Donnelly, Director-General of the Northeast Asia Office of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During these discussions, views were exchanged on a wide range of topics, including security and defense cooperation and regional affairs. Building on the upgrade of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and the formulation of a comprehensive Japan-Canada strategic roadmap agreed upon at the Japan-Canada summit in March, both sides agreed to further strengthen cooperation toward the implementation of security cooperation outlined in the roadmap.
