At a ceremony held August 24 in Levis, Quebec, Davie announced it has been awarded a historic contract by the Government of Canada to build six program icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG). This firm-price contract, valued at $11.3 billion, marks a significant milestone in the renewal and expansion of Canada’s Arctic fleet under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). Construction of the first vessel will begin in 2027, with delivery of all six vessels scheduled throughout the 2030s.
Through this agreement, the Government of Canada demonstrates its commitment to adapting its practices to today’s strategic, economic, and security realities. It also reflects the confidence it places in Davie to build complex vessels essential to the accomplishment of strategic missions, while creating the necessary conditions for Davie, its partners, and its suppliers to improve their efficiency, productivity, and capacity for innovation, for the benefit of the Canadian shipbuilding industry.
The new fleet will replace the Canadian Coast Guard’s heavy and medium icebreakers that operate in Atlantic Canada, on the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Great Lakes during the winter, and in the Arctic during the summer. This investment will allow the Canadian Coast Guard to continue providing the essential services Canadians rely on every day, including keeping critical trade and transportation routes open year-round, supporting northern and coastal communities, protecting Canadian waters, and strengthening Canada’s presence and sovereignty in the Arctic.
