On March 6, 2026, from 5:50 p.m. for approximately 35 minutes, Defense Minister Koizumi held a defense ministerial meeting with Canadian Defense Minister McGuinty, who was visiting Japan.
- At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Koizumi reiterated his recognition that security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is inseparable. He then mentioned that the two countries share common interests in regional situations and security, such as the Indo-Pacific region and the Arctic, and spoke of the importance of having opportunities for active dialogue and exchange.
- The two ministers exchanged views on the current situation surrounding Iran and regional situations, including the Indo-Pacific region.
- Minister McGuinty mentioned that the two countries signed a Defense Equipment and Technology Transfer Agreement in January this year, and introduced the Defense Industrial Strategy that was first announced in Canada last month. The two ministers agreed to accelerate coordination to promote collaboration between the defense industries.
